Salem is packed with things to do that won't cost you anything. Whether you're a lifelong local or just passing through the Willamette Valley, here are our favorite free ways to spend a day in Oregon's capital city.

Wander the Riverfront

Riverfront Park hugs the Willamette River right downtown, with wide paved paths, big green lawns, and public art. It's perfect for a morning walk, a picnic, or just watching the river roll by. Kids love the Eco-Earth Globe, and there's almost always a festival or food cart popping up on the weekends.

Explore Bush's Pasture Park

Just south of downtown, Bush's Pasture Park combines 90 acres of rolling lawns, old-growth oaks, and the beautiful Bush House rose gardens. In late spring the roses are unbeatable, and the tall trees make it one of the coolest, shadiest spots to relax on a warm afternoon.

Tour the Oregon State Capitol

The Oregon State Capitol is free to visit, and the grounds are a destination in themselves. Snap a photo of the golden Oregon Pioneer on top of the dome, stroll the tree-lined mall, and if you time it right, take a free guided tour inside.

Hit the Trails at Minto-Brown Island Park

Salem's largest park has over 30 miles of trails winding through forest, farmland, and wetlands along the river. It's a favorite for walkers, cyclists, and dog owners, and you'll spot herons, ducks, and the occasional bald eagle.

Browse Downtown & the Galleries

Downtown Salem is walkable and full of character. Window-shop the local boutiques, admire the historic architecture, and pop into the free galleries. On the first Wednesday of many months, downtown hosts art walks with open studios.
